Become a PADI Assistant Instructor with PADI IDC Staff Instructor Randy Cain of Tennessee Divers

So you're a PADI Divemaster, but you don't want to become a full fledged PADI Open Water Instructor just yet or ever? Well, there is the PADI Assistant Instructor certification.

In the PADI Assistant Instructor course, you will gain more experience in the PADI System of scuba diver education. You will learn how to teach the classroom portion of a student's scuba education.

Randy's IDC Staff Instructor CertificateOnly PADI IDC Staff Instructors (like Randy!), PADI Master Instructors with the IDCS rating, or PADI Course Directors may teach the PADI Assistant Instructor course at specific locations... Be sure to verify the specific requirements that must be met to conduct an Assistant Instructor course.

What can PADI Assistant Instructors do?

  • Teach knowledge development (classroom) presentations (under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor)
  • Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills (under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor)
  • Teach the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course
  • Teach the Project AWARE Specialty course
  • Conduct PADI Discover Scuba experiences
  • Teach Emergency First Response courses after successfully completing the Emergency First Response Instructor Course
  • What do I need to start?

     

    • PADI Divemaster scuba diver rating or qualifying certification from another organization
    • Be at least 18 years old
    • 60 logged dives (with experience in night, deep and navigation)
    • Proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months

    What it takes

     

    • Self-study – Knowledge reviews, quizzes, lectures and presentations
    • Complete water skills and stamina exercises in confined and open water
    • Confined water – Skills review and assessment, workshops and presentations
    • Open Water – Workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations
